Janssonius

MV Janssonius, Oceanwide Expeditions’ newest Polar Class 6 ship, is purpose-built to push deep into Antarctic bays and Arctic pack ice while keeping expedition comfort high. Hosting just 170 guests and 72 crew, she pairs rapid dual gangways and sheltered Zodiac platforms with a glass-walled Observation Lounge that never lets icebergs out of sight. On board you’ll find a lecture theater buzzing with science talks, Nordic-inspired cabins, and a crew of naturalists whose goal is simple: maximize your time off the ship and in the wild.

Dining

Culinary Philosophy

The galley follows a “taste-of-place” model: Arctic char in Svalbard, Patagonian lamb in the Southern Ocean, and fresh-baked bread every morning. Hearty buffets fuel active days, while three-course plated dinners anchor the evening recap ritual.

Restaurants & Bars

  • Main Dining Room – Single-seating venue with panoramic windows; casual expedition wear welcome.
  • Expedition Bar & Lounge – Barista coffee by day, polar-themed cocktails by night, plus an ever-changing wildlife slideshow.

Onboard Facilities

A palette of Nordic woods and cool grays runs throughout, while wrap-around glazing keeps whales, bergs, and birdlife always in sight.

Indoor & Outdoor Spaces

  • Observation Lounge – 270° windows, library alcove, and small bar for warm drinks during wildlife watches.
  • Lecture Theater – Tiered seating, two large screens, and excellent acoustics for science briefings.
  • Open Bridge – Guests are welcome almost 24/7 to watch the officers thread ice leads.
  • Mudroom – Lockers and boot dryers beside dual Zodiac doors for fast launches.
  • Fitness Room & Sauna – Cardio machines, free weights, and a Finnish-style sauna overlooking the wake.
  • Expansive 360° decks – Unobstructed photography and aurora viewing.

More Information About Janssonius

Brand Heritage

Family-owned since 1993, Oceanwide Expeditions specializes in small-ship, wildlife-focused voyages. Commissioned in 2021 and delivered in 2022, Janssonius is the fleet’s second purpose-built new-build and mirrors sister ship Hondius in design and philosophy.

Design Description

The ice-strengthened hull carries a hydrodynamic “Green Bishop” bow and twin ABC engines for 15-knot transits. A flexible power-management system lowers fuel use and vibration, while stabilizers and shallow draft enhance comfort and allow access to remote landing sites.

Unique Features

  • Polar Class 6 – One of the first new-generation passenger vessels built to the latest PC6 code.
  • Sheltered Zodiac Platform – Two indoor embarkation areas speed up landings in rough weather.
  • Advanced Eco-Tech – LED lighting, biodegradable lubricants, steam heating.
  • Citizen-Science Friendly – Dedicated lab and workshop rooms for plankton tows, seabird counts, and more.
